Jesus told Peter that the reason why he knew that the man he’s following is not ordinary but the son of God is because the God told him. Discernment is having a Revelation of the true identity of something or something.
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.(1 John 4:1). It is very important to discern/test every spirit because if you do not test spirits you will be carried away by every wind of doctrine. That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;( Ephesians 4:14).
If you don’t want to be deceived by any one ask the Holy Spirit to show you the heart of everyone you meet. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, (John 2:24).
Many if not all of the people you trusted who ended up disappointing you wouldn’t have been successful if you would have discerned their hearts and intentions.

Ladies and gentlemen if you want to enjoy a fruitful life both spiritually and physically you must have the spirit of discernment. One of the most peculiar things about the ministry of Jesus Christ us that nothing caught him by surprise because he knew what will happen and the place of the people’s heart. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. (Matthew 26:21-25) .
But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, (John 2:24)
