Things rejected by wisdom and spirituality : The selfish

And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:31)

Many of us believe we are not selfish and that we care about others but the truth is we are not as selfless as we think. Movies have made us believe that selflessness is when you go to extreme lengths to save a person but you can sacrifice the safety of others for that particular person, for example you’re in a movie and your beloved is held hostage and you are requested to give the criminals the keys to a weapon that will end countless lives, movies say it’s okay to give them the keys so that you won’t have to see your beloved get killed. But the truth is that is also selfishness because you’re only considering yourself.

Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of someone who was totally selfless because he risked everything so that you and I could be saved. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.( John 3:16-17)

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:12-13)

Today many Christians are guilty of selfishness because they don’t care whether their neighbour is saved or not, all they care about is that they themselves have received Christ and they will go to heaven but the truth is that if you don’t love your neighbour you can’t enter heaven. We as Christians must be selfless because we have the mind and heart of Christ hence we must preach the gospel to our neighbours, invite them to church, help pay for someone who is going to preach and to pray for those who are preaching as well as for those who aren’t saved.

3 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.( 2 Timothy 3:1-5)

It is very unfortunate that we live in a time where people only care about their own success, education, husband, wise, children, health, safety and happiness. But this is not why Christ saved us. We are supposed to build and prepare His church.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:19-20)
