Men lie to save their conscience

And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.(Acts 5:8)
Today we conclude this series of looking at why men lie, and we end by looking at a reason that is mainly responsible for “white” lies.
Why men lie

4. To save their conscience (to feel better)

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?(Acts 5:3)

Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit. But if you read the story you’ll realise that the apostles didn’t ask anyone to bring any money, it was the people who decided to sell some of their properties and give the money to those who were in need. If that’s the case, Ananias should not have died because unlike his wife he didn’t lie to anyone. And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?(Act 5:2-3)

The reason why the act of Ananias qualify to be called a lie is because both him and his wife wanted to fit in to a particular class of people. He might have had a need for some of the money but that is not enough reason why he should act like it’s all of the money. It is possible that he did that because he didn’t want the apostles to be sad, he wanted the apostle to be happy with him, such reasons are why people tell “white” lies. If you truly love a person you will tell them the truth no matter what, because you want them to be free. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.(John 8:32).

There is no reason on earth that will justify telling a lie. It is better to make someone sad or angry because you told the truth, the truth sets people free. People might be sad or angry because you told them the truth but eventually they will thank you for your honesty. The truth sets people free however, it can only help those who know it so tell the truth no matter how people may feel.

Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.(Acts 5:9)

Apostle Peter says that Sapphira agreed with her husband to lie but when we look at the Scripture the one who actually told a lie is Sapphira. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.(Acts 5:7). When you defend or allow a lie to stand you are a part of the liars. Sapphira supported her husband’s actions just as is expected by modern society and stood by him till her death. And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.(Acts 5:2).

Ladies and gentlemen a good wife is not a woman who always agrees with her husband but she must help him. God created women as a perfect helper to men(males). And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.(Genesis 2:18). Never allow a position, relationship or marriage to make you compromise your principles. Always stand for the truth.

In conclusion, in the begining of the series I pointed out that you can lie by words and actions. Ananias and Sapphira lied using both these things, Ananias lied by pretending and Sapphira told a lie and both of them paid dearly for it because they lied to the Holy Spirit. There are two people you should never ever lie to, God and yourself. Many of you haven’t been truthful to yourselves in a long time because you don’t want to lose something or someone. Whatever it may be it’s not as important as your liberty. Be honest with yourself and you’ll always be free. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.(John 8:32).

Use the word of God to search, examine and deliver yourself from any lie that you told yourself or somebody else made you believe. Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?(2 Corinthians 13:5).
