Fishing requires patience

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.(Romans 8:25)

Let’s look at one of the major characteristics of every fisherman, which is patience. Very person that beats the odds had ocean loads worth of patience.

And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.(Luke 5:5).

Nothing fuels hard work like patience and dedication. If you are truly passionate about something, you will be willing to loose sleep because of it. Jesus simply wanted to turn the passion his disciples had of catching into a passion for catching men. Because they almost had all the necessary requirements to catch men, but they couldn’t start before they changed their focus.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.(Ecclesiastes 9:10)

The passion for doing God’s work is the standard we Christians should use as the children of God, hence working for God is our greatest passion. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;(Colossians 3:23).

Fishing proves that patience pays, and since we are called to be fishers of men we should diligently be patient while we are busy fishing.

Next week we’ll look at another factor that makes fisherman special.
